What You Might Bring to Counselling

People come to counselling for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a clear difficulty, such as anxiety, grief, trauma, relationship problems or low self-esteem. At other times, it may be harder to put into words. You might simply know that something does not feel right, or that life has become difficult to manage alone.

Counselling offers a confidential space to slow things down and explore what is happening for you. It is different from speaking with friends or family, because the focus is on your experience, your feelings, and what you may need going forward.

There is no expectation that you arrive with everything neatly explained. We can begin with what feels most present, and work at your pace to understand patterns, emotions and choices more clearly.

The areas below are not labels for who you are. They are examples of experiences we might explore together in counselling.

What we could explore together

Anxiety, depression and overwhelm

Support with anxiety, panic attacks, depression, stress, burnout and anger when life feels too heavy, fast-moving or difficult to manage alone.

Loss, grief and adjustment

Space to explore bereavement, grief, loss, adjustment, health diagnoses and life changes that leave you feeling unsettled, numb, confused or adrift.

Relationships, family and self-worth

Support with family difficulties, relationship problems, low self-esteem, attachment patterns, confidence and understanding your needs more clearly, gently and honestly within relationships.

Trauma, abuse and safety

Space to explore the effects of abuse, domestic violence, traumatic experiences and painful events from the past that still feel present today.

Risk, coping and emotional distress

Support with suicidal thoughts, emotional distress, risk-taking behaviours, substance misuse and finding safer ways to respond when feelings become overwhelming or frightening.

Body, intimacy and self-acceptance

Space to explore body image, weight management, sexual difficulties, shame, confidence and reconnecting with yourself in a more accepting way again.

“NOTHING EVER GOES AWAY UNTIL IT HAS TAUGHT US WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW.”
